1 - Post-Digital Imaging and Storytelling

Alexenberg, M., 2011. The Future of Art in a Postdigital Age: From Hellenistic to Hebraic
Consciousness. 2nd ed. Bristol/Chicago: Intellect Books.

My understanding of Post-Digital Art is that it is digital art with a human or biological focus. Theres often a mix of reality and the digital world but this can be done in various different ways. From editing a photograph to creating a cursor and leaving it in a public space.

Vernacular of File Formats - Rosa Menkman (2010)

Rosa Menkman, (2010), A Vernacular of File Formats [ONLINE]. Available at: https://www.slideshare.net/r00s/rosa-menkman-a-vernacular-of-file-formats-4923967 [Accessed 5 January 2019].

This artwork was created by Rosa Menkman. She filmed a video of herself and took still images from that and corrupted them in various different ways by compressing different file types. This falls into a subgenre of glitch art but since there is a human aspect to the art, i feel that it is very much post digital as well.

Square Waves - Constant Dullaart (2009)

The image created, although very digitalised, still resembles what is dipicted in the original image. The pixelated alteration of the image resemble waves which is very much a characteristic of open water. Although it does not show any human like image, this is an example of an image of reality being used to create something post digital.

Brush Stroke - Elisa Giardina Papa (2012)

This is an example of digital making its way into reality. It is meant to appear that part of the image has been erased with a brush stroke in a program like Photoshop. In reality, the brush strokes are a sculpture and this is an unaltered image.

All of these works represent just a small part of what can be done with post digital art. There is a large combination of what can be done, as described in the quote at the beginning of this post. I chose these three pieces to show different sides to the genre.

EXPERIMENT

Although it doesnt have a heavy digital focus, i wanted to do something simple. I like the idea of taking something from reality and just using a simple digital process to change it. I took a picture and drew over it. Itcan be done from a phone now so the process of digitally changing something is fully accessable to anyone with a mobile phone.
