4 - Screens and Interative Media Interfaces
What we view media on has always been evolving and chaging. Moving images were displayed on zoetropes and praxinoscopes. Still images weaved into fabric. There are always new ways to view media.
Akinori Goto (2016)
3DPrint. 2016. Akinori Goto Creates the Illusion of Dance with 3D Printed Zoetrope. [ONLINE] Available at: https://3dprint.com/141869/akinori-goto-zoetrope/. [Accessed 5 January 2019].
This zoetrope was 3D printed with lights running through it. It depicts a single ballerina and then others begin to appear. Instead of just using a series of still images, Goto uses lights to create the image and while it spins, the next series of lights illuminate, giving the illusion of movement. The movement is very smooth but it may have been nice to have seen some colourused in this piece.
Holographic Projector - DSEE.LAB (2018)
CCTV Video News Agency. (2018). China Made Holographic Projection Device to be Showcased in “Flowers in May” Gala. [Online Video]. 3 May 2018. Available from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTcFV4GBX1I. [Accessed: 5 January 2019].
This works as a series of spinning fan like blades with LEDS and this gives the appearance that the image is floating. Although it appears there is no form of screen, there is. Holograms may be the future of screens and it seems that the future is trying to eliminate the need to have a particular surface to view media on. This seems more commercial but i could see its usage in art.
TshirtOS - CuteCircuit (2012)
CuteCircuit. 2012. The T-shirt of the Future. [ONLINE] Available at: http://cutecircuit.com/tshirtos/. [Accessed 5 January 2019].
This tshirt is controlled by an app allowing the user to display social media posts, songs and pictures. It also has interactive features like a microphone, audio jack and camera. Although somewhat impractical, ths idea to have a wearable screen that functions is inventive. Im not sure on the health and safety issues with this but this could be expanded upon for much larger art projects within fashion.
What we percieve as screens isnt always the case. We can view media on anything we desire with the right technology behind it. All of these projects use current technology such as 3D printing and LEDs, and using these in various ways means we can break the perception of screens.
EXPERIMENT
My experiement was to create my own thaumatrope. I drew a bird on one side of a bit of paper and a cage on the other. I thread some string through the ends and recorded myself twirling it.
