5 - Tactical Media

A definition of tactical media has been hard to come by. The best quote i found was "Tactical Media are what happens when the cheap 'do it yourself' media, made possible by the revolution in consumer electronics and expanded forms of distribution (from public access cable to the internet), are exploited by groups and individuals who feel aggrieved by or excluded from the wider culture…"
(Garcia & Lovink, "The ABC of Tactical Media", 1997.

My take from it is that it is a form of art that takes and manipulate existing parts of media to transform it into a message of some kind, whether this be political or commentary on social events, as a form of activism.

Rita Raley - Tactical Media, 2009

Raley, R. (2009). Tactical Media. University of Minnesota Press.

Rita Raley wrote a book about tactical media simply called "Tactical Media". It writes about how the practice serves to critque political, social and economic order. Tactical media is a form of media activism that has a deep social message through unconventional means.

A type of tactical media i found was visual kidnapping. One artist named Zevs, hijacks parts of big advertisment campaigns and uses them in his own way. He is also "best known for his Liquidation series, in which he drips paint from recognizable Western logos to transform them from the known to the unstable" (Artnet, 2019).

Banksy - Love is in the bin, 2018

Someone very well known is the street artist and activist Banksy. Appearing in random places, Banksys art serves a commentary on modern social issues. Love is in the bin was a recent work that sold at auction. Once it sold, the piece passed through a shredder built into the frame, destroying the work. It seemed to be a jab at the establishment and also Banksys way of saying his work is not for sale or for admiration of the wealthier population.

EXPERIMENT
For this experiement, i thought about what i was able to do to parody something politcal. I chose everyone favorite political figure Donald Trump and merged him with Disneys beloved Anger character from Inside Out. Because Trump is a figure of fun.

These are the two images i started off with.

And this was the monstrocity i created. I could have done a better job of it but i liked the butchered asthetic. I changed the tone of anger making him less red and more orange and gave him the signature Trump hairdo.
