6. Transmedia Storytelling: YOUKU v YouTube
"Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a
fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels
for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment
experience." (Transmedia Storytelling 101, Henry Jenkins 2007).
YouTube is a place for anyone and everyone to upload their video to the world. Certain videos that are popular end up on YouTubes trending page.
In china, there is something called YOUKU, a video hosting site. Admittedly, i do not know much about it as i cannot read or understand the language so it is a little difficult for me to analyse.
In comparison to YouTubes trending page, this is YOUKUs home page. There is already a distinct difference in content due to being able to see thumbnails. YouTube has a strong beauty community that rack up millions of views where as i cant seem to see something simalar in the YOUKU page. YOUKU seems to have some professionally produced content and the videos are advertised in a less competative way.
YouTube is good for independant work. Users who create content and upload it onto the site for others. YOUKU seems to be more professionally produced like a TV network so there may not be as much variety or freedom with the content. Alhough this may be avalible on the website, it is not made clear by the homepage.
EXPERIMENT
The video i created is about something i struggle with all the time. As a digital artist, it is important to have the right hardware to run the software needed to create art. I, however, am a poo student working on an old surface pro. Photoshop with certain brushes stops running completely for minutes at a time until it catches up. The video serves as a representation of the frustration i get with modern digital art. Where artists before may have made errors with traditional painting, they were never physically stopped by their paintbrush until it decided to load again.
